WFIA: Opportunities & Challenges in e-Democracy

3 March 2010: 7:00 am - 8:30 am

Main Dining Room, The Auckland Club
34 Shortland Street
Auckland

NZCS World Famous in Auckland presents:

Engaging Your Customers On-line - Opportunities & Challenges in e-Democracy

Speaker: Carol Hayward, Research Manager, Rodney District Council

This month's event will look at the current state of local government e-democracy and the expected areas of future activity.

The effective use of ICT has the potential to lower the barriers to democratic engagement and to provide the tools that communities can develop and manage for themselves.

This session will review the lessons learned internationally and provide valuable insights into customer or citizen expectations.

Includes full breakfast.

NOTE: The Auckland Branch AGM will be held immediately following this event - all members are urged to attend.

About The Speaker

Carol Hayward is Research Manager at Rodney District Council and has a background in e-participation and democratic engagement.  She previously worked at Bristol City Council in the UK as part of the Local e-Democracy National Project and subsequently gained European funding to continue progressing e-participation activities while evaluating and promoting lessons learned.

Since moving to New Zealand in October 2008, Carol has worked with the Association of Local Government Information Managers (ALGIM) to develop a local government survey on current and future e-democracy practices which formed the basis of an e-Democracy white paper, launched at ALGIM's conference in November 2009.

Back in Rodney, Carol provides strategic input to the Council's website development and social media activities and has led the introduction of the Council's e-panel, online forums and related activities.
