NZCS AI: What Is Knowledge Engineering?

20 May 2010: 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

WT1103
Auckland University of Technology
360 Queen Street
Auckland CBD

AUT’s Knowledge Engineering and Discovery Research Institute (KEDRI) develops new methods and systems for information and data modelling, data mining, knowledge discovery and computational intelligence, and applies them to important real-world problems. The methods are inspired by principles from nature such as biological neural networks and brain functions, genetics, evolution and quantum physics.

Today it is not enough to just have access to data and information - thanks to the Internet this has never been easier and with the newer technologies such as cloud computing data portability is potentially less of an issue as well. The question is how can we best utilise all this data to make our life easier?

It seems the more data we have the more complex the decision process becomes. Perhaps if we want technology to help make our life easier we need to first understand how we solve complex problems in our heads and then how much of that can currently be 'replicated by' or 'delegated to' a machine. What we are seeing in today's knowledge engineering world is the equivalent of the 'assembly line' in the industrial revolution. It is the start of a new generation of data mining, pattern recognition, autonomous learning and cognitive systems to help make our ever more complex world easier to comprehend.

Come along to an evening of knowledge engineering exploration and bring your own complex decisions to contemplate.

Who should attend

Anyone dealing with mountains of data at work wanting to know if technology can or cannot help them make better decisions. Anyone who is interested in or is studying artificial intelligence and wants to actually apply what they are learning. Anyone who is open to new technology and innovation solving today's business problems.

This event is open to NZCS members and non-members, registration is essential (as there are limited places).

About the NZCS Artificial Intelligence Specialist Group

We are a new specialist group within the NZCS keen to promote artificial intelligence awareness in the wider community and to bridge the gap between academic research and industry practice. Check out our community website http://nzaisg.ning.com/ to find out more and become a member of the group.
