WFIA Event: Global Perspective on Cyber-warfare, Cyber-terrorism, and Cyber-crime

6 May 2009: 7:00 am - 8:30 am

Main Dining Room, The Auckland Club
34 Shortland Street
Auckland

The Cyber world and real world used to be two separate worlds that rarely collided. However today the intersections between both worlds are getting bigger and the actions in the cyber world are affecting the real world.

Cyber warfare is defined as the use and management of information in pursuit of a competitive advantage over an opponent (business or military). The objective of the attacks are to derive tactical information, spreading propaganda, undermining and weakening the opposing force. These attacks may have government support as well as the involvement of foreign governments, the usage of various types of DDoS, cyber zombies, cyber mules and the defacement of websites, attacks may originate from around the world with the use of cyber mules.

Countries at war are now employing cyber attacks as weapons that weaken the economy, defense or communication of enemy nations. Simultaneously, cyber criminals are working together to disseminate information and means for hackers to hack into systems and launch attacks. While there is immense cooperation between criminals, organizations and governments lack coordination or cooperation in overcoming cyber crime and terrorism. There is a need for international cooperation and joint exercise between countries to combat these attacks. Most importantly more awareness on cyber warfare must be done.
