Birds of a Feather: Virtualisation

8 September 2009: 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

The Bar @ Hotel So
165 Cashel Street
Christchurch

This is an open invitation to those in Canterbury's ICT community to meet informally each month over a drink and/or counter meal, in addition to our current monthly events.

These Birds of a Feather events are popular at other NZCS branches and we welcome this opportunity to discuss issues and practices of interest to our industry in Canterbury.

Come along and join in the discussion, facilitated so that everyone can have his or her say! Share your experiences, your war stories, your successes and your knowledge, or come along to learn from others.

No cover charge, cash bar and counter meals ($10 ea) available.

Virtualisation

Virtualisation is the creation of a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, such as an operating system, a server, a storage device or network resources.

It has been happening for many many years in our industry with virtual memory and virtual machines dating back to almost the start of computing. However in the past few years there has been an explosion and now it is virtual everything.

Whether it is the desktop, the server, applications, storage or even the network, Virtualisation seems to be the buzz at the moment.

There are various offerings from the open source and commercial communities - mostly "Free" but what is the real cost, and who is using what?

Come along and have a chat on this theme over a drink and some networking.
