A real-world (and Nelson based) presentation on what B.I. means to a successful organisation and how it is being implemented. A small case study on a national primary producer/manufacturer and an introduction to the concept of collaboration in the South Island.

Business Intelligence has different connotations for different people. Some people think of B.I. as the glue that allows their business to run, others view it as an unnecessary overhead and many others aren't sure what Business Intelligence actually is!

While you won't walk away from this event with all the answers, the presentations will get you thinking about how you could apply B.I. or possibly how your decision-making could be improved by thinking more about the application of information.

After the presentations (about an hour) - please stay behind for a glass of something and kick off the festive season! Nibbles will be provided.

About The Speakers

Tony Millar has over 15 years experience of driving value from organisational investments in IT. After starting off in management accounting and transforming a large UK retailer's BI and performance management function, Tony has spent the last decade consulting and leading large complex BI projects in varied sectors throughout the UK, Europe, US and Australasia.

Along with his business knowledge in various sectors, Tony completed an MBA in 2003 researching the key variable in IT/IS success and concludes that any "IT payback" ultimately depends on the need for alignment between the IT and organisational strategy. Other qualifications include a B.Com from Canterbury (NZ), post graduate accounting (ACCA,UK) and project management ( PRINCE2 accredited practitioner).

As CEO of Montage; Tony brings a passion for success along with strong leadership that helps ensure alignment between people, process and technology

Hugh Stark cut his teeth on BI when Oracle pushed Discoverer back in the mid 1990s. Since moving back to New Zealand and starting at Port Nelson in 2004, the database might have changed to Microsoft SQL but the effort in the BI space has gone up almost at a logarithm rate per year.

The more data you store, the more people want to know about it and that is definitely the case at Port Nelson. The Port has spent a huge amount of time deploying BI via Excel, flat reporting, Adobe Air and SharePoint is at the doorstep. As ICT Manager of a very complex business, the requirements for data mean spending a lot of time with the business units and tailoring BI systems that meet their needs and adding value to their business streams and let's not forget the external customer and their constant need to understand their own market share
