Web Services in the Real World

24 September 2009: 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Westpac
Level 1, Optimation House
1 Grey Street
Wellington

The original intent of the Internet was to allow computer systems to compute and collaborate.

However, achieving this goal has always been laborious, complex and fraught with difficulties.  A raft of technologies known collectively as Web Services have emerged in recent years and have proven to fulfill some of the promises envisioned in the Internet's early years.

In this informative talk Mike Reid will discuss how Web services are implemented in the software-as-a-service and cloud computing models. The session will include the practical aspects of making Web services fit for use in any organisation.

Topics include:

  • What web services really are
  • Advantages and different approaches of Web service models
  • Practical Web service design, and
  • Considerations when building Web services

Includes light lunch

About The Speaker

Like most professional developers Mike Reid had an interesting in computing from an early age. Rather than study Computer Science, he pursued studies in Physics and Mathematics.

While working toward a PhD in Astrophysics he wrote a large amount of scientific software for finding and modeling gravitational micro-lensing events as part of the MOA project - a joint New Zealand/Japanese team. MOA were the first to discover extra-solar planets using the gravitational micro- lensing technique and have now discovered several planets, including the lowest mass extra-solar planet detected so far, and a system containing multiple planets.

After achieving a PhD, he went on to work on real-time software for scientific instruments, and discovered that his scientific background provided a different practical perspective on computing. Since he began consulting with Argonaut Ltd he has developed systems in areas as diverse as traffic information, health systems, hardware device control and measurement.

Recent projects including building and training other developers in the design and implementation of Web services that scale to millions of transactions per day.
