You’re at uni or tech and you’re not entirely sure how to find a job. Maybe you’ve recently graduated and you’re not sure where to start.
At NZCS we’re here to help – while we’re not a recruitment agency, we give you the tools to jump-start your future career.
We connect you with industry and joining puts you ahead of the pack, both locally and overseas.
Student membership is just $10 a year and you can complete the first steps online right now.
So, why join?
Increase the number of employers who see your CV
We're putting together an ICT-specific CV feedback and advice service for students, as well as building a database where you can showcase yourself to potential employers.
We have a bunch of corporate partners (including householf names like ASB, Fonterra, Gen-i, IBM, Meridian Energy, Microsoft, Xero, etc). Check out the full list of corporate partners here.
Increase your overall employability
Your CV has an "Education" section that lists your qualifications. NZCS student members can add another section called "Professional Memberships" and add "Student Member of NZ Computer Society".
This shows employers that you have a demonstrated interest in industry happenings, and that you're serious about not just joining the industry, but becoming an active member within it - a professional, not just a practitioner.
No matter how you look at it, if you're recognised as a professional - someone who believes in excellence - doors will open.
Expand your industry networks
We run a number of events throughout the year such as "ICT Evening with Industry ", free for students. While you munch down on free beer and pizza, industry professionals tell you about the career options out there and how to best find a job during a recession. What could be better?
Increase your global network
NZCS has global affiliates which means no matter whether you’re heading to Hong Kong, Malaysia, the UK, or Australia to work, you can walk into a partner event and be welcomed into the industry there. Check out the full list of kindred organizations here.
Also, if you want to work overseas having a membership of a professional body on your CV gives you a stamp of credibility to overseas employers. Sure, you’ve done some freelance work for friends and family, and you’ve got pretty good grades; but joining NZCS shows that you are a New Zealand professional, not just a regular graduate.
NZCS Student Business Cards
NZCS student members may opt to purchase packs of 50 NZCS-branded business cards for just $20. Inclusion of one of these cards in job applications or given out during employment interviews will demonstrate your commitment to professionalism, and with a large number of senior ICT professionals as members, there's a good chance that the person receiving the card will also be a member of the Society.
Increase your awareness of the ICT industry
ICT is about more than computers – it is becoming a key driver in health, education, environmental, entertainment and other industries. Our newsletters link you to interesting initiatives within all areas of ICT, and inform you about events that give back to the community, such as the Imagine Cup or yMedia Challenge.
Membership Certificate
Student and Graduate Members receive a NZCS Membership Certificate, perfect for your office or flat.
Discounted Membership and Events
Student Membership is only $10 including GST, a fraction of normal membership of the NZCS. As a student member you will also receive full member discounts to a wide range of events and other services.
NZCS Student Chapters
As a student member you can start or participate in a "Students of NZCS" (SNZCS) Chapter at your campus or region. If your campus or region doesn't already have a Student Chapter, please contact NZCS for information about setting one up.
Setting up or operating a SNZCS Chapter is incredibly rewarding and having it on your CV might well make the difference come graduation time.
Entrant Membership
Entrant Membership is a transitionary membership level between Student Member and professional membership.
Entrant Members with more than 6 months of postgraduate experience are eligible for the NZCS mentoring scheme and other programmes to help develop them personally and professionally.
