And... we're back!
by Paul Matthews, NZCS Chief Executive
After a bit of a hiatus for a few weeks while we concentrated on getting a few key projects up and running, it's great to be back with Newsline!
I thought I'd kick off the Newsline restart with an update on what we've been up to including our major Name Change consultation, ICT-Connect in Schools programme, our re-launched National Event Series, some upcoming changes to CPD (the ongoing education professionals need to stay current) plus the CloudCode and Degree Accreditation projects. Plus an exclusive deal on Computerworld for NZCS members.

Request for thought
by Juha Saarinen, Newsline Editor
TradeMe's Mike O'Donnell (MOD)'s opinion piece on goverment procurement and greedy IT vendors makes for an interesting read.
Faced with IT providers charging insane amounts for very little, central and local governments try to mitigate the risk by issuing dense guide lines to protect the public purse from being pillaged by unscrupulous vendors. This month we have some answers, from the ITP sector at least. Plus an update on the skills shortage stats and some recent happenings in this space.

It's the Internet, stupid
by Paul Brislen, TUANZ CEO
Well that's put the rat well and truly among the pigeons. Auckland-based ISP Maxnet has launched a sub-brand called FYX which offers 'pay as you go' data use at a cost of 34 cents per gigabyte. Users pay a monthly base fee of $34.34 (I notice a numbering trend here) which means for 100GB/month you'll pay around $70.
That alone is nice - use as much as you want, or as little, without having to change your plan. But FYX hasn't stopped there.

List of upcoming tech-related conferences
by ICTEvents.co.nz
Last year NZCS released the ICTEvents.co.nz website to list all upcoming tech-related events throughout New Zealand. The site has since listed hundreds of events from many different organisations, becoming the #1 listing site for tech events and presentations.
We're very excited to announce some changes to this site, with a new "Upcoming Conferences" section listing upcoming conferences across New Zealand. From the end of May these will also be automatically listed in Newsline.
