Introduction from the CEO

Well October has certainly been a frantically busy month for NZCS!

As you're no doubt aware we officially released ITCP Certification on October 1, with a takeup rate far exceeding expectations. In fact takeup has been such that we're 1 month in and most of the way towards achieving our 12-month projections already.

Personally, I think the significant level of interest indicates pretty strongly the need for professional certification in IT which, of course, mirrors the findings of our initial research. We didn't create ITCP for the fun of it - it was only planned after considerable research and consultation.

The fact is, before ITCP, IT was probably the only profession without independent professional certification - which is frankly the hallmark of all professions. As someone said to me during the consultation period, if plumbers, sparkies, builders, engineers, doctors, accountants, architects and most others have it, why doesn't IT?

The answer of course is that IT is actually a very young profession. For instance, what we in IT see as a major and truly significant milestone (the celebration of 50 years of IT innovation next year) really is a huge time for us, yet just a drop in the bucket compared with many other professions...

However the fact remained that it is clearly time for IT to mature into a true profession, and that can only be achieved via independent professional certification. Hence, ITCP was born!

For those that don't receive Computerworld, you can view details of the initial "False Front Cover" promotion here.

And finally, do mark September 16-18 2010 in your calendar. This is the date of the first huge NZCS conference in many years, a masssive celebration, and an opportunity for the entire sector to come together as one and celebrate 50 years of ICT Innovation. NZCS conferences used to be legendary, and I certainly hope to see you there for this momentous occasion.

Kind regards,

Paul Matthews

Announcing new 2010 Conference Keynote: Ian Taylor

As most of you will know NZCS is in the process of organising a major conference in September 2010 to celebrate a significant milestone - 50 years of ICT Innovation in New Zealand.

The list of keynote and other speakers being assembled is like no other conference in New Zealand history - a true "who's who" of ICT innovation over the last 50 years, mixed with those who are clearly set to contribute to the next 50.

NZCS is proud to announce the latest confirmed keynote: Ian Taylor.

Ian Taylor

Ian TaylorIan Taylor (Ngati Kahungunu) is recognised as one of New Zealand's leading Maori innovators.

After a 20 year career with Televison New Zealand Ian left in 1988 to establish three successful technology businesses from his base in Dunedin: Taylormade Media - a television and multi media company; Animation Research Ltd (ARL), one of the country's most celebrated high tech companies; and BookIt, a specialist on line booking company.

Taylor shot to fame in 1992 by revolutionalising the way the world watched sport with the creation of real-time 3D graphics never seen before for the Americas Cup.

In 1999 Virtual Spectator was born - a real-time 3D graphics tracking system enabling the Americas Cup to be tracked and viewed in 3D in real time. This created even more revolutionary graphics for TV as well as the ability to broadcast the race online in a digital form for the first time ever.

This was later expanded to cover other sports such as Golf, Cricket, Motorsport, Gliding and Aerosports.

His company is credited with many other breakthroughs in digital and 3D graphics, and were responsible for content as diverse as the Bluebird's Skiing Penguins.

You can read Ian's full story here.

Ian joins a host of other keynotes and presenters such as Craig Nevill-Manning (the kiwi who established Google's first remote engineering centre), Rod Drury (serial entrepreneur), Nat Torkington (open source guru), Chris Liddell (Microsoft Global CFO - not confirmed) and many yet to be announced.

You can find out much more about this landmark celebration at www.innovation.org.nz

ITCP Certification - Only 6 weeks left for FastTrack

Just a quick reminder for those eligible that the ITCP FastTrack Process is only available for another 6 weeks, until 15 December 2009.

What is the FastTrack Process?

ITCP doesn't include a "grandfathering" clause, meaning everyone must work through an assessment process against the specific standard before ITCP can be awarded. This is to protect the integrity of the certification.

There is a FastTrack Process, however, for those that were full professional members of NZCS or an equivalent overseas professional body at the start of June 2009. This is because these individuals have shown a commitment to professionalism, plus have undergone a partial assessment already as part of their membership application process.

The main differences between the FastTrack Process and standard routes is that those entering the FastTrack Process generally don't need to work through the interview process with a Subject Expert or meet some of the entry requirements for the other routes.

When is the FastTrack Process available until?

The FastTrack Process is available for 6 months only, until 15 December. This is less than 6 weeks from now. All FastTrack applications must be received before then to qualify.

Those eligible for FastTrack can still apply for ITCP after that date, however will need to work through one of the more indepth standard routes.

From the Blog: ACTA - What is it, and why does it matter?

Some may have heard about the ACTA negotiations that have been occurring for most of this year.

ACTA stands for "Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement", and is a treaty currently being negotiated in private by a number of governments including our own.

The concept behind the treaty is sound - an attempt to standardise copyright and intellectual property law across multiple countries. That in itself is a good thing. However what is starting to cause some concern is what this actually means.

Firstly, however, I just want to point out that NZCS has consistently and repeatedly stated support for the concept of Copyright. Whilst some groups oppose the mere concept of limiting the ability to take someone else's work and gain from it, NZCS believes the concept of Copyright and Intellectual Property is solid - artists and creators should have the right to protect their work.

However that right should be balanced with the right of individuals and organisations to have unfettered access to the massive informational resources and services of the Internet.

NZCS 50th Anniversary Conference, 16-18 September 2010

www.Innovation.org.nz - 50 years of ICT Innovation in New Zealand

InnovationPlans for the 50th Anniversary Conference are progressing fast, and we'll be making an announcement later this week with a list of keynote speakers and other information.

The New Zealand Computer Society (NZCS) is proud to announce a special conference to celebrate 50 years of ICT Innovation in New Zealand.

We will not only reflect on our 50 year journey, but more importantly the next one to come. Kiwi ingenuity is needed today more than ever, so we shall embrace this.

Distinction Hotel in Rotorua, 16 - 18 September 2010.

The 50th Anniversary conference will bring together the people who deliver results for New Zealand - business entrepreneurs, visionary IT academics and industry professionals, a veritable "who's who" of ICT innovation.

Mark this date in your diary to celebrate New Zealand's achievements over the past 50 years, learn from our collective experience and listen to the innovators and entrepreneurs of the future.

International Keynote Speakers include Kiwis who have proven to be highly successful on the international arena of ICT and wish to share and inspire us with their stories.

This conference is immediately prior to the Brisbane World Computer Congress, hosted by IFIP (International Federation for Information Processing) http://www.wcc2010.com and the Call for Papers for both conferences will be advertised by both organizations in September 2009.

Breaking from the traditional approach to conferences, one of the three streams will be "Concept to Reality" where we will focus on a series of promising ideas to assist the initiator to progress, pragmatically, to the next stage.  We will also award a prize to the best ICT Post Graduate, and include an "unConference", where

Sponsors and Trade Exhibitors are encouraged to register their interest as early as possible. The brochure will be available in June 2009.

More information will be made available at www.Innovation.org.nz in due course.

Elizabeth Eastwood
Chairman, 50th Anniversary Conference
